Prostate Cancer and Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Prostate Cancer

Early diagnosis can change the course of the disease. A timely assessment makes it possible to identify changes, answer questions and decide on the best treatment.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is a malignant tumour that develops in the prostate, a gland of the male reproductive system. It is one of the most common types of cancer in men, particularly from the age of 50 onwards.

How the disease progresses

In most cases it progresses slowly and may cause no symptoms in the early stages, which means that many men are unaware of its presence. Regular medical follow-up makes it possible to identify changes at an early stage, increasing the effectiveness of treatment and the likelihood of success.

There are several treatments available, tailored to each case, with very positive results, particularly when the diagnosis is made at an early stage.

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

An enlarged prostate can be treated and controlled. The urinary symptoms associated with BPH are common and should not be regarded as normal.

What is Benign Prostate Hyperplasia?

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, is a benign increase in the size of the prostate that occurs naturally with ageing. It is not cancer, but it can cause symptoms that interfere with everyday life.

Why do the symptoms occur?

As the prostate enlarges, the urethra, the channel through which urine passes, becomes compressed. This compression makes it harder to empty the bladder and alters the urinary pattern. Over time the bladder may become more sensitive or less effective, making the symptoms worse.

A medical assessment makes it possible to confirm the diagnosis and identify the most appropriate treatment for each situation.
